Cosmos in community garden, Wells

cosmos flower alexandra king photo

Cosmos in a community garden project, Wells Somerset.

These Cosmos (as I was informed by  gardeners) look spectacular in real life. Not dark and moody like my photograph but bright and light in a wave of flower heads.
The day I photographed these I was walking past a flat we used to live in on St Thomas Street, Wells.  The cut through path that ran along the property had previously just been two baron strips of grass either side of the path owned by the council. Then one day a rose appeared on the opposite side, then a hydrangea and then on our side more roses.
Our landlord called a 'landgrab' and shockingly dug up the rose, dumped it on the other side whilst ripping up a square of turf to replace his 'stolen' patch! We left the flat.

Then whilst walking to work, I cut through the path to be overwhelmed by the sight of these stunning flower beds brimming with flowers, this cosmos, the now established roses, lavender and even a dwarf apple tree. The gardeners had created this little space of beauty in their own time and expense for the community.

I am thankful there are people like this in the world who just get on make things lovely without fuss or waiting for permission.

Autumn Park Wells

Autumn Shadows in the park. Like how the sun hits the bench on the second image.

Wells Foggy Morning Landscapes - October 2019

Another of my favourite foggy misty mornings. The first bright and cold morning of the year.
Bishops palace fields in Wells have beautiful specimen trees, these were good practice for landscape especially as they are well laid out.

Canon 50mm lens f/22 low key, cool colour edited in lightroom

Canon 50mm lens f/22 please with the detail on the grass and soft silhouette of the central trees.

Canon 50mm lens f/22 high key soft silhouettes

Canon 50mm lens f/22 low key - love this old dark horror look.

Happy with the softness of this shot. 50mm

Canon 50mm lens f/22 the mist creates a back light for the silhouettes to stand out.

Canon 50mm lens f/22 - liked this shot enough to try three ways
Canon 50mm lens warm colour filter in lightroom
 Canon 50mm lens f/18
 Canon 50mm lens f/22

Canon 24 - 100 lens f/22 - taken the following week with a different lens with higher f stop.
Canon 24 - 100 lens f/22 - I liked the landscape shots of the first set but wish I'd had a wider lens with me. Preferred the 50 mm lens but with the lack of mist there weren't the silhouettes created in the trees.

Climate Strike Wells - 20th September 2019

Extinction rebellion flag Wells Somerset Alexandra King photography

Extinction Rebellion Climate Strike in Wells Somerset. Wells has an active sustainable group along with newly elected progressive leaders on the council from the Green Party and Lib Dems.

I missed the meeting in the town square but couldn't miss the huge procession of people young and mature walking past the studio window. People settled on the Cathedral green with their vibrant banners and pledges, a wonderful mix of school children, parents and grandparents.

It was a positive step forward with clear actions we all can take to be responsible citizens of this planet.

Lantern Parade Wells Somerset

The first lantern parade in Wells, Somerset. January 2019.
In the rain, it was magical as one by one these beautiful paper lanterns arrived in the pitch black darkness of the park. The drums started and the procession bobbed along to the Cathedral. One of the most simple and effective treats to see in Winter and I look forward to 2019s lantern parade in Wells.
